Getting Started with WCRL

Welcome to WCRL! This guide walks you through joining our Discord server, registering as a competitor, and getting on a team — even if you’ve never used Discord before.

It should take about 5 minutes.

If you ever get stuck on anything, let us know and we can help you get sorted out.

1. Join the WCRL Server

2. Find the Right Channel

Look at the list of channels on the left side of the screen. Locate the #bot-commands channel — this is where you will type commands to register and create/join a team.

3. Register with /register

This is the most important step — it’s how the bot knows who you are and lets you join a team.

  1. In the message box, type /register and select it from the menu.
  2. A small form will pop up on your screen with two fields:
    • Full Name — your real first and last name
    • School Email — your school email address
  3. Fill in both fields and click Submit.

If everything looks good, you’ll see a private confirmation message (only you can see it) saying you’re registered. Two things happen automatically:

  • You’re given the Competitor role, which unlocks the team commands below.
  • Your Discord nickname in this server changes to the full name you entered, so people can find and recognize you.

Already registered and need to fix a typo? Just run /register again with the corrected info — it overwrites your old name/email, nothing gets duplicated.

Getting an error?

  • “Doesn’t look like a valid email” — double check for typos; it needs a normal name@domain shape.
  • “Already registered to a different Discord account” — that email is tied to someone else’s Discord account already. If that should be your account, message an Executive.

Check that it worked any time with /status — it’ll tell you whether you’re registered and under what name.

4. Get on a Team

Once you’ve registered, you can create a new team or join an existing one.

Option A: Create a new team

If your team doesn’t exist yet:

  1. Type /team create and select it.
  2. Discord will ask for a name — type your team’s name (3 to 32 characters).
  3. Press Enter.

This automatically creates:

  • A private text channel just for your team.
  • A team role, so only your teammates (and Executives) can see that channel.

You’re added to the team automatically as its creator.

Option B: Join an existing team

If a teammate already created your team:

  1. First, find the exact team name with /team list — this shows every team and how many members it has.
  2. Type /team join, select it, and start typing the team’s name — Discord will suggest matching teams for you to pick.
  3. Press Enter.

You’ll now be able to see and post in that team’s private channel.

Other useful team commands

Command What it does
/team roster Shows who’s on your team (or add a team name to see any team’s roster).
/team leave Removes you from your current team. You can join or create a different one afterward.
/team list Lists every team and its member count — handy for finding the exact name to /team join.

Note: You can only be on one team at a time. If you want to switch, /team leave first.
